💔 No One Should Have to Choose Between Their Wallet and Their Life
45% of insured, working-age adults reported receiving a medical bill or being charged a copayment for a service they thought should have been free or covered by their insurance. This indicates that a significant number of people still face financial barriers to accessing necessary medical care, even when they have insurance. A Gallup poll found that 34 million Americans knew someone who died in the past five years because they couldn't afford needed medical treatment. "High copayments can be prohibitive, causing individuals to forgo essential medical care. This underscores the profound impact financial barriers can have on health outcomes."
Insurance companies often delay or deny approval for biopsies or MRIs and frequently impose high copays. These barriers can critically impact cancer detection and staging. These delays can mean the difference between early detection and advanced disease. At Biopsy Inc., we are committed to bridging this gap by providing the necessary grant assistance to those in need, ensuring that everyone has the best chance at a successful outcome.
In June 2024, I went in for a routine breast exam. I wasn’t worried—just following the advice every woman hears. But after the scan, the technician asked me to wait. The doctor had seen something. “Suspicious,” they said. Possibly cancer.
I froze.
Then came the next blow: I needed a biopsy. It would cost $450. I said, “But I have insurance.” The woman at the desk was kind but firm: “You haven’t met your deductible.”
I had just paid off bills. My car had been in the shop. And now, I might have cancer but couldn’t afford to find out. I broke down crying. I asked her, “What happens to people who can’t pay?” She looked at me and said quietly, “They go home. More than you know.”
That moment broke something in me.
A biopsy isn’t optional. It’s the only way to confirm cancer. Without it, treatment can’t begin. Without it, lives are lost. We called the insurance company again. By some miracle, they agreed to pay the copay. The biopsy was done. Then came the MRI copay $1,200. Somehow, it got done.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. The tumor was successfully removed and the lymph noise clear. While I was deeply grateful for my healing, the journey that led me there remained unforgettable.
I made a commitment: if I survived, I’d help others who face the same impossible choice health or money.
